Globe valves rely on a linear stem pushing a plug up and down into a seat, whereas butterfly valves use a quarter-turn rotary disk that rotates 90 degrees inside the flow path.

1. Weight and Physical Footprint

  • According to technical data from Belimo’s Application Guides, a standard 6-inch globe valve assembly weighs 354 pounds and stands 47 inches tall. 
  • By comparison, an equivalent 6-inch Belimo butterfly valve weighs just 44 pounds and stands 28 inches tall. This massive reduction makes installation much faster in cramped mechanical rooms. 

2. Absolute Tightness and Leakage Control []

Traditional HVAC globe valves can lose tight seating over years of constant throttling. Belimo addresses this by equipping its butterfly valves with a specialized resilient seating compound. They guarantee 0% leakage (absolute tightness) even as the pipe diameter scales up. This prevents passing water when closed, keeping energy costs down. 

3. Flow Path & System Pressure Drop

Globe valves force fluid through an internal “S” shaped maze. This tortuous path generates substantial internal resistance, resulting in a higher pressure drop. Belimo butterfly valves provide an unobstructed, straight-through design when fully opened, which lowers pump workload and saves system energy. 

4. Orientation & 3-Way Piping Flexibility

Conversely, a 3-way Belimo butterfly valve array can be mounted to a T-piece in any structural configuration and used interchangeably for both mixing and diverting applications without mechanical penalties.
