To accurately test a car battery’s strength using a digital multimeter, you need to perform two distinct tests: a static (resting) voltage test to measure charge state, and a cranking load test to check its health under electrical strain.

Configure the Multimeter
- Plug the black probe into the COM (Common) port.
- Plug the red probe into the VΩmA port.
- Turn the dial to DC Voltage (marked as V⎓ or DCV). If using a manual-ranging meter, set the dial to 20V.

Measure Resting Voltage (State of Charge)
Engine turned off for at least 1 hour
- Touch the red probe to the positive (+) terminal.
- Touch the black probe to the negative (-) terminal.
- Read the display while the engine and all accessories (lights, radio) remain completely off.

Perform a Cranking Load Test
Requires a helper
- Keep the multimeter probes firmly on the battery terminals.
- Have a helper start the vehicle ignition while you watch the meter screen.
- Observe the lowest number the voltage drops to during the ~2-second engine turn-over.
- 9.6V or higher: The battery is healthy and holding sufficient cranking amperage.
- Below 9.6V: The battery capacity is severely degraded and due for replacement.

Check the Vehicle Alternator (Running Voltage)
Engine idling
- With the engine running, keep the probes on the battery terminals.
- Read the voltage on the display.
- 13.5V to 14.7V: Normal reading; the alternator is actively charging the battery.
- Under 13.5V: The alternator may be failing to supply enough charge.
