Dangers of Impure or Not Pure Copper Electrical Wires
Using electrical wires that are not pure copper—such as Copper-Clad Aluminum (CCA), Copper-Clad Steel (CCS), or counterfeit alloys—presents a severe fire hazard and increases the risk of electrical failure. Because these alternative metals cannot match the physical or electrical properties of pure copper, they compromise the safety of an entire building.
High Fire Risks
- Extreme Overheating: Aluminum and steel have much higher electrical resistance than pure copper. High resistance forces the wire to work harder, generating intense heat that can easily melt the surrounding plastic insulation and spark a fire.
- Oxidation and Arcing: Non-pure metals oxidize rapidly when exposed to air. This oxidation creates a high-resistance barrier at connection points, which leads to electrical arcing (sparking) and catastrophic structural fires.
Physical and Mechanical Weaknesses
- Brittleness and Breakage: Alternative metals are far more brittle than flexible pure copper. They easily crack or snap under the stress of being pulled through tight walls or conduits during installation.
- Terminal Fatigue: Wires that are not pure copper suffer from severe metal fatigue at the points where they connect to outlets, switches, or breakers. Over time, minor vibrations can break the connection, triggering intermittent power faults or total system failure.
Performance and Economic Issues
- Voltage Drop: Inferior metals cause significant voltage drops over long distances. This drop chokes power delivery, causing appliances to malfunction, lights to flicker, and internet data packets to corrupt.
- High Utility Bills: Because impure wires have high resistance, they waste a massive amount of electrical energy as unused heat. This inefficiency drives up your monthly electricity consumption and utility costs.
